There’s nothing quite like sibling relationships. They can be joyous, calamitous, close and supportive, or distanced—sometimes a combination of all these at various times.

I’ve worked with numerous clients over the years who have brought in their joys, sorrows, anger, confusion, and desire to develop closer, more harmonious relationships with their sibling(s). Sometimes there’s a need to process grief from the loss or estrangement of a sibling.

Individual psychotherapy for adult sibling concerns

I offer individual therapy for those who want to explore and address any of the following:

  • Reduce conflict within your sibling relationship through better understanding of how and why the conflict exists (including relationship dynamics and patterned behavior);

  • Develop better awareness of the typical behaviors and responses you have toward your sibling;

  • Reduce your tension, anxiety, and anger prior to contact with your sibling;

  • Improve your boundaries with your sibling—whether there’s need to strengthen them and/or open up more;

  • Grieve the loss, distancing or estrangement of a sibling in a nonjudgmental space.

A Walk in the Park

Adult sibling tension and conflict is common. So is distancing and under-developed sibling connection. Over the years in my therapy practice I’ve noticed how much pain can stem from difficult or distanced sibling relationships as well as how much these  relationships can add to one’s sense of security and happiness. I count myself lucky to have happy, trusting relationships with my siblings in adulthood. I have my siblings to thank for that, as well as how each of us has contributed to the harmony of the relationships. No person or relationship is perfect nor does it have to be. But having a basis of love, respect, support and humor within one’s sibship is life enhancing.

Whether there are major rifts in your relationship or you’re simply looking for ways to have a closer, more harmonious sibling relationship, I can help you identify ways to potentially mend and better develop your connection to your sibling.

Consultation for adult sibling concerns

You may find yourself wondering how to deal with a particular situation with your sibling. This can be the case even if your sibling connection is good. Or you might be experiencing situations that cause stress and conflict like mental health problems and addiction, differences in values and lifestyles that bring tension or distancing, the needs of aging parents, and unresolved resentment.

I provide consultation within three areas:

  • The potential for repairing strained sibling relationships

  • How to approach difficult topics with your sibling

  • Mental health problems and addiction within the family
